Former Pakistan speedster Mohammad Amir is all set to get British citizenship which will make him eligible to play for England and in the IPL as well. The left-arm pacer recently opened up on his chances to play in the IPL once he gets the British passport.
Mohammad Amir got married to a British citizen and lawyer Narjis Khan in 2016. He settled in the United Kingdom in 2020 and is now eligible to get British citizenship by 2024.
There is one more year to go: Mohammad Amir on his possibility to play in IPL
Amir spoke to ARY News on July 2 about his future in international cricket. He was also asked about whether he would participate in the Indian Premier League once he gets the British Passport.
“First, I will not play for England. I have played for Pakistan. Second (talking of IPL), there is one more year to go. What will be the scenario at that time….I always say that I go step by step. We don’t know what will happen tomorrow and I start thinking about playing IPL in 2024,” Mohammad Amir said on ARY news.
“I don’t know where I will be a year later. No one knows about the future. When I get my passport …whatever the best opportunity will be and what I will get…I will avail it,” the former Pakistan pacer further added.
It’s worth noting that Pakistan players are not allowed to participate in the IPL since 2008. Earlier, all-rounder Azhar Mahmood earned an IPL contract from the Punjab Kings in 2013 after he got British citizenship. He also played for the Kolkata Knight Riders later.
Once Mohammad Amir gets a British passport, he’ll become eligible to register for the IPL auction. He might become one of the few Pakistan-based players to have played in the league if he gets a bid from any franchise.
The left-arm pacer has a decent record against Team India and in the Indian conditions. He retired from International cricket in December 2020 but continues to play in leagues across the globe and gets decent success with the ball.
Mohammad Amir has scalped 59 wickets in 50 T20Is at an exceptional economy rate of 7.02. The left-arm pacer had bowled an incredible spell in Asia Cup 2016 against the Men in Blue as he dismissed Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane and Suresh Raina with the new ball and finished with the figures of 3-18. Also, his Champions Trophy 2017 Final spell still haunts Indian fans.
