Indian batter Shubman Gill’s poor running between the wickets cost him his precious wicket during the first ODI match between India and West Indies on Friday.
After losing the toss, India were asked to bat by West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran at the Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain in Trinidad. After a span of three years, the venue is hosting an ODI match since Virat Kohli’s spectacular ton in 2019.
Shikhar Dhawan, who is the stand-in skipper in the ODI series, opened the innings along with Gill, who is playing an ODI game after 19 months.
Shubman Gill hits maiden ODI fifty against West Indies
Gill started his innings with a boundary on the first ball off Jayden Seales, shuffling a bit, to put the ball wide past covers. He pulled Alzarri Joseph for a six and a four in the next over.
Watching his opening partner from the other end, Dhawan could not control his brilliant strokes and played a hook shot off Joseph for a six over fine leg boundary.
Gill hit four boundaries more before the completion of 10 overs, hitting two apiece against Seales and Kyle Mayers. The youngster dispatched one over long-on against West Indies spinner Gudakesh Mother.
There was no way Gill wanted to calm himself after getting a brisk start in the innings. He picked up a single on the final delivery of the 12th over to complete his maiden ODI half-century in just fourth game.

Gill slowed down a little after breaching the 50-run mark and there wasn’t a single boundary off his willow until his dismissal.
Gill tucked Joseph’s back of the length delivery to the right of mid-wicket. It could be an easy single but the 22-year-old thought he had all the time to make it to the non-striker end.
However, that was not the case as West Indie captain Pooran turned around and nailed it with a pinpoint throw to stun the Indian opener.

Gill departed on 64 in 53 balls, his innings included six fours and two sixes. He set up India’s innings with Dhawan in their opening stand of 119 runs.
